Student retention

Ending each school cycle with the same number of students we started with is a challenge. There can be several reasons for them leaving, although there are many factors that, as an educational institution, are in your hands.

The process of constantly delighting your current students and their parents is a great way to reinforce their decision to continue their education at your school.

We have lots of tips that will help you; in this first part of the post we share a few to get you started.

Strategies to Retain Students

retain students at your school

Take your new students through a friendly orientation process.

Let them know and feel that their institution supports them and wants to know how they feel. Tell them who they can turn to with questions or to ask for help. Help them feel comfortable at their new school. (Virtual tours, direct contact details for staff, a site map, etc.)

Open a direct line of communication.

Give your current students direct, fast-response communication channels so you can address young students' needs in a timely way and keep them from dropping out.

Using social media or private chats will help you build effective communication with students and parents, which can lead them to stay at your school.

“Immediate prevention and support actions in response to dropout can have a high success rate, because more than 70% of young people who dropped out of school consider it a bad decision and 70% are interested in resuming their studies.”

Run electronic satisfaction surveys.

Ask students and parents to rate the service and care your staff provide. If you want more people to respond, make sure your website is adapted to mobile devices; it will take them just a couple of minutes, from the comfort of anywhere. Take their suggestions into account and improve the service at your school.

Listen and guide.

Try to understand the situation that pushes your students to leave your school. Remember that for many children and young people, their school is often the only place where they receive support and guidance.
