Millennial parents

In this post, we explain how it works and its advantages

When you hear the term Millennial, you probably think of someone between 20 and 30 years old, passionate about technology, a bit carefree, and with new habits and behaviors focused on a certain lack of concern.

This term has been aimed much more at young people, since it covers a very wide generational gap, and although we already know all its characteristics by heart, it is time to talk about a new and important concept: millennial parents.

Thanks to this generation, fatherhood, motherhood, and the concept of family are changing and evolving, bringing different practices and customs that you need to take into account in your school's strategies, since they are the ones who, in most cases, will make the final decision.

Here are some of their most important behaviors

On Technology:

For millennial parents, technology plays a very important role in their lives and in their children's lives. However, they know there must be a balance, and although their children were born in a far more technological era than theirs, it is about setting limits and understanding the advantages and disadvantages it can have without restricting its use.

On Social Media:

It used to be very rare for a parent to have social media; now they do, and they interact with their children as if they were just another contact.

They prefer to be present rather than not knowing what is going on and leaving their children adrift in places they know from experience can be tricky territory.

On Their Role as Parents:

There is greater freedom of communication with their children in the way they guide and raise them. They are parents who want to be present at all times and in their children's decision-making to guide them. They are more open-minded about education and the different options for a better future for their children.

They encourage them to study and follow their dreams, and they want to be part of that by providing well-rounded learning. They guide rather than limit.

On Education:

They look for the best options for their children, where education is based on several areas and is not only academic. They are their mentors and personal coaches, and they look for schools that, in addition to an excellent academic level, instill values, a good environment, sports, nutrition, and care for their body and mind in general.

To do this, they take their children's opinion into account and try not to impose anything, drawing on their own experience with education (in most cases).

For them, the internet will be their main reference, giving them information and lessons that they will pass on to their children.

According to Google:

“Nearly 6 in 10 millennial parents in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru say YouTube has helped them learn how to do something new or acquire new skills.” Think with Google

This new role of millennials has to be taken into account in your school for the strategies you have in mind, since, depending on the level of education you offer, they will be immersed and fully informed.

Here are some tips for your school's strategies:

  • Have an open communication channel for parents on social media, since they will surely find you there and research your school.

  • Create quality content that gives them reasons why your school is the best option, with quality information they can easily find online, because that is where they will look for it. Blogs and videos are a very good option.

  • Dare to create original campaigns; millennial parents are mostly “young” and open-minded.

  • Don't focus your communication only on mothers, because this is an inclusive generation with shared responsibility, where fathers now play an equally important role in decision-making.

  • Focus on the benefits that the education you offer will give their children beyond knowing something by heart. Don't be afraid to show your values and other characteristics that set your school apart from any other.
