NEW SOCIAL MEDIA LAUNCHES: WHATSAPP STORIES
WhatsApp, the messaging app acquired by Facebook in 2014, has just launched its own 'Stories', leaving WhatsApp statuses behind. Some already knew to expect this after we saw the huge success of Instagram Stories, launched last year.
This Monday, many users saw the new menus in the app, changed for the first time in several years, which now, instead of the status (Hey there I´m using WhatsApp), include the option to share stories with their contacts.
Stories can be images, GIFs or videos, edited with drawings and emojis, and they will be visible to contacts for 24 hours before disappearing. Sound familiar? With good reason: they work exactly like Snapchat stories, launched three years ago.
Toward Passive Content Consumption
What is the most important aspect of this update? With this change, WhatsApp moves significantly closer to the other social networks, offering its users, for the first time, the possibility of sharing passive content, which is consumed just as it is on most social networks.
This will possibly greatly change how the app is used in the future. It can also offer interesting possibilities for businesses and advertisers, since with stories they will be able to communicate with their contacts in a way that is both useful and enjoyable.
