4 tips for a successful online store

E-commerce has changed the lives of countless people around the world. How many of us have traded endless afternoons of Christmas gift shopping for just a few clicks on our computer or smartphone?

Today, we are no longer limited to a set of products available in a physical store; instead, we have a whole universe of products available at any moment and at any time.

As online shopping options have grown, so have the resources for launching an e-commerce business. However, competition keeps growing, so it becomes necessary to put strategies in place so that your online store is always one step ahead of your competitors.

In this article, we describe several ways you can keep your online store cutting-edge and help your business grow.

1. Research Your Direct Competitors and Try to Be Better.

There is no better way to grow your business than having a better or more interesting product than the one your competitors have.

Make sure you are constantly researching the latest market trends and keep an eye on what your competitors are already offering. Which best-selling products are most similar to yours? Why do they lead the market?

Consider redesigning your value proposition so that your product is seen as an improvement on what already exists. Being cutting-edge means being out in front and always prepared for any change that may occur in your industry. Make sure you stay informed, identify new trends, and create a product that sets you apart from the rest.

2. Create a Unique Brand and Use Quality Content to Stand Out

Your business is much more than just the product or service you sell. Most successful companies that manage to stay on our minds for a long time have done so thanks to their concept of “brand.”

Every brand is different from the rest, but the brands that have achieved worldwide recognition got there thanks to similar strategies: through their ads, designs, social media presence, word of mouth, or customer service, among many others.

As an online store, your internet presence is extremely important and is tied to increasing traffic to your website. Make sure the content you share through your communication channels is relevant and consistent with the message and values your brand represents.

The best way to ensure the latter is to create original content. Producing interesting content with the potential to be shared online, such as blog articles or videos, is a very effective way to keep your customers engaged with your brand and to position your business.

3. Use Marketing Strategies That Involve Your Customers

Making your brand interesting and unique usually requires a high level of involvement from your customers. It is essential that they are fans of your product and want to interact with your content beyond the mere purchase process.

Today we are constantly bombarded by ads and other marketing actions, so our attention span has shrunk dramatically. We therefore need to stretch our imagination and design marketing strategies whose main goal is to motivate our customers to interact with our brand.

To do this, encouraging customer-generated content (known as UGC, short for “user-generated content”) is very powerful for several reasons:

  1. Your customers become your marketing team. Giving your customers the opportunity to create visual content whose main goal is to promote your product turns them into ambassadors for your brand. Offering them the chance to be featured on your brand's website helps build a much stronger bond with your customer base.
  2. It is a source of content that often outperforms professionally created content. An “unboxing” video or a photo of your product taken with an iPhone in a “real” setting helps your potential customers imagine what it feels like to use your product. It is the equivalent of touching a product in a physical store.
  3. You can use this to boost other word-of-mouth activities, such as a referral program.

Creative marketing strategies are often the simplest to implement. Something as simple as sending your customers a handwritten thank-you letter after their purchase always delivers good results at minimal cost. Adding a personal touch makes your customers feel special and valued by your company.

4. Make Sure Your Store Has a Clean, Visually Appealing Design

Several studies have shown that more than 90% of e-commerce consumers say they value visual appearance above any other factor when shopping. In addition, more than 50% of consumers leave the store and do not return if they do not like its overall look.

This shows that graphic design is extremely important when it comes to increasing your business's sales. That is why having a well-designed page and an attractive logo becomes a crucial aspect of your store's success.

This is also important when presenting your product. Make sure your photographs show what your product is about, and the higher their quality, the better.

You can also replace photographs with high-quality video that shows your product in action. Showing a video or a moving image goes one step beyond the static product images that are so common today.

Remember that your product deserves to be bought, and therefore you should advertise it as such.
